Good article on the imprisonment of punk band Pussy Riot

An article by one of the members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot has been posted on the Free Pussy Riot website. You can read it here.

The band have been in prison for the past five months for performing a protest song entitled "Hail Mary, Expel Putin" in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. It was in protest at the Russian Patriarch (of the Russian Orthodox Church) calling on believers to vote for Putin.

They are charged with hate crimes against Christians.

This article explains their side of the story. It is very good.

I expect that senior Syrian clerics have supported Assad.

I wonder what would have happened if there was an anti-Assad protest in front of the mihrab of the Umayyad mosque in Damascus which used obscenities, parodied Islamic prostrations and called on Muhammad to support democracy.

The women would have probably been torn limb from limb.

No well-meaning Muslims, Christians or secularists would support them. Youtube would have pulled the video, the BBC would not dare to show any clips (cf Muhammad cartoons).

Relatively speaking these women chose the target of their provocation wisely.

I am not sure what your point is.

The women did not choose their target because they thought they'd get less grief from the Orthodox Church than from Muslims. They chose it because they had a specific objection to the patriarch's support of Putin.

Sure, they may have had a harder time if it was an Islamic place of worship but . . . how is this relevant to the specific issue.

It sounds more like a general gripe that although Christians can abuse their position Muslims can be even worse. Perhaps so but I don't see the relevance of that observation to this issue.

An alternative viewpoint, well-argued:
